Located in western Mongolia, Khomyn Talyn Takhi National Park is one of only three sites in Mongolia where the Takhi, or Przewalski’s horse—the world’s last truly wild horse—thrives alongside species like the saiga antelope and Mongolian gazelle. Established in 2020, the park protects 4,110 square kilometers of essential habitat for this unique wildlife and aims to restore the ecosystem’s natural balance, including the revival of riparian forests and grasslands.
While the park’s remote location appeals to visitors seeking tranquility, it also presents challenges. To support conservation efforts sustainably, Khomyn Talyn Takhi has embraced ecotourism, creating the Takhi Eco Lodge. Here, guests can stay in comfortable accommodations, experience authentic Mongolian cuisine, and enjoy activities like swimming in the Zavkhan River or shadowing rangers as they patrol the park. This approach enables the park to fund its conservation work and offer visitors an immersive experience in Mongolia’s wild landscapes.

Our team at SLS Consulting worked closely with Khomyn Talyn Takhi in developing tourism products and conducting on-site training for staff. Our collaboration covered areas like adapting tourism management practices, sustainable lodge operations, and marketing strategies that respect the delicate balance between tourism and conservation. The result is a growing ecotourism model that aligns with the park’s mission to protect wildlife and foster community engagement in conservation efforts.
Khomyn Talyn Takhi National Park stands as a promising example of how conservation can be economically sustainable while offering unique, responsible tourism experiences.
